The siding slides behind vinyl siding trim pieces that hide the gap and the cut end.
Then install the front facing trim so it overlaps the side trim.
Even though most reputable contractors will never install siding over existing siding there are knuckleheads out there that will say you can do it and it s not a problem.

Best way to cut vinyl siding and installation leave a 1 4 in.
Vinyl siding must be installed against a flat surface.
Installing vinyl siding over wood siding wood must be sound.
This works fine most of the time but always add a few blobs of caulking inside the bottom lip of the top course for extra security.
If you choose to install your trim over your lap siding lp smartside 440 series trim is a fine choice.
Existing wood siding must be in good shape with no rot or mold and fastened tightly to the wall.
If the wood siding is beveled or lapped you.
The most common approach here is to install sill trim at the soffits rip down the top course of siding and crimp the siding so the sill trim holds it in place.
Lock the panel into the one below it then gently snug it up before nailing.
The main difference in the installation instructions from glancing through them both is that the hz10 product is permitted to have the trim installed over the siding while the hz5 product is not.

Before you replace the siding cut and install new j channels to prevent water from leaking into your home.
For an attractive corner install the trim on the sides of your house flush to the face of the house.
Cut the horizontal piece to size and snap it in place over the vertical moldings.
